Study Abroad Scholarships & Funding

American Councils Scholarships -  American Councils offer a variety of scholarships to students participating in their programs. Scholarships include: Fulbright-Hays, AC Study Abroad Alumni Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Language and Area Studies Expert Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Need-Based Scholarship, and the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship. 

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship - The Gilman scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman is funded by the U.S. State Department.  

David L. Boren Scholarship and Fellowship - The Boren provides generous funding to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program and can be used to fund most study abroad programs.

The Foreign Language and Areas Studies Fellowships  -  FLAS Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related areas or international studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education. Many U.S. institutions offer FLAS fellowships and they can be used to cover study abroad programs. 

The School of Russian and Asian Studies - The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) offers some financial awards to students who participate in their programs. These include the “Home and Abroad Scholarship” as well as “Challenge Grants”.

Armenia

American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers a program in Yerevan, Armenia where students can learn Armenian. 

Armenian Studies Grant - Gulbenkian Foundation -The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was created in 1956 by Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, a philanthropist of Armenian origin. The Foundation’s main purpose is to improve the quality of life through art, charity, science, and education. In conjunction with cultural activities, the Foundation supports Armenian Studies by providing scholarships and grants for individuals, institutions, and social organizations.

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Armenia each year. 

Peace Corps - The Peace Corps is an independent agency and volunteer program run by the United States Government that provides international social and economic developmental assistance. The Peace Corps runs a program in Georgia where volunteers can work with communities on projects in education and youth development. Volunteers also learn Armenian. 



Azerbaijan


American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers a program in Baku, Azerbaijan where students can learn Azerbaijani and Turkish.  

Critical Language Scholarship - The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a U.S. Department of State summer program that offers American college and university students the opportunity to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. CLS recipients have the entire cost of their summer program covered and are provided a small stipend. The CLS Russian language program run by American Councils is ocassionally held in Baku, Azerbaijan. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Azerbaijan each year. 



Georgia


American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers a program in Tbilisi, Georgia where students can learn Georgian and Chechen.  

Critical Language Scholarship - The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a U.S. Department of State summer program that offers American college and university students the opportunity to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. CLS recipients have the entire cost of their summer program covered and are provided a small stipend. The CLS Russian language program run by American Councils is ocassionally held inTbilisi, Georgia. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Georgia each year.

Kazakhstan


American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers two programs in Kazakhstan, both in Almaty. The first is "Russian Language and Area Studies Program" focused on Russian, while the second is "Eurasian Regional Language Program" focused on Kazakh. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Kazakhstan each year. 



Kyrgyzstan


American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries.  American Councils offers one program, the "Eurasian Regional Language Program -- Kyrgyz" in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. 

Critical Language Scholarship - The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a U.S. Department of State summer program that offers American college and university students the opportunity to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. CLS recipients have the entire cost of their summer program covered and are provided a small stipend.The CLS Russian language program run by American Councils is occasionally held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Kyrgyzstan each year.

Project GO - Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a collaborative initiative that promotes critical language education, study abroad, and intercultural dialogue opportunities for Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students. Project GO offers a Russian language program that is often held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Recipients have the cost of their program covered. Must be an ROTC student to apply. 

The School of Russian and Asian Studies - The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) is an organization of consultants and advisers dedicated to the educational opportunities offered by challenging locations. SRAS runs two programs in Kyrgyzstan, both in Bishkek. One program is "Central Asian Studies" while the other is "Russian as a Second Language".



Tajikistan


American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers a program in Dushanbe, Tajikistan where students can learn Persian (Farsi, Tajik, Dari), Pashto, and/or Uzbek. 

Critical Language Scholarship - The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a U.S. Department of State summer program that offers American college and university students the opportunity to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. CLS recipients have the entire cost of their summer program covered and are provided a small stipend. The CLS Persian language program run by American Councils is held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Tajikistan each year. 



Uzbekistan
