Ani Avetisyan at Bloomberg -Caucasus correspondent for Bloomberg, covering Armenia and Azerbaijan with specific focus on regional politics, security, energy, andbusiness.

Baku Research Institute (BRI) - Non-profit think-tank launched by independent experts in 2018 with the goal of providing local and international audiences with high quality analysis, opinion, surveys and research on a variety of issues in Azerbaijan, including social and religious issues, the economy, and history. All publications are peer-reviewed. Published in Azerbaijani and English. 

Eurasianet - Independent news organization founded in 1999 by the Open Society Institute that provides news, information, and analysis focused on countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Eurasianet is now hosted by Columbia University’s Harriman Institute and is supported by a variety of international foundations. Coverage in English and Russian.  

Faktyoxla - Faktoyoxla “Factcheck” is an initiative implemented by the İnstitute for Democratic İnitiatives (IDI), aimed at preventing the manipulation of Azerbaijani society by delivering political news and information in an impartial manner. Coverage in Azerbaijani and English. 

OC Media – User-funded independent media company covering Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the North Caucasus. Provides daily coverage in the form of short-form bulletins, longer form investigations and analysis, opinion, and arts/culture coverage. 

The Diplomat - International online news magazine founded in 2001 covering politics, society, and culture in Asia. The Diplomat frequently runs articles on Central Asia and is based in Washington, D.C. The Diplomat was founded by Minh Bui Jones, David Llewellyn-Smith, and Sung Lee.  Coverage in English. 

Turan News Agency - Once of the leading independent news agencies in the former Soviet Union founded in 1990. While the agency distributes news, analytical articles and reviews on Azerbaijan, their activities have been signifigency curtailed in recent years. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian.



Online Media


AbzasMedia – Independent media focusing on Azerbaijani news, politics, and human rights issues. Several staff members are currently in prison in Azerbaijan. Publishing in English and Azerbaijan. 

Air Center – The Center of Analysis of International Relations is a think tank founded in 2019, which provides comprehensive analysis of global and regional processes, and expands the scope of activities aimed at raising the international community’s awareness of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy priorities, particularly the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and regional security. Coverage in Azerbaijani and English. 

Anadolu Ajansı (AA) - Turkish state-run news agency based in Ankara, Turkey. While primary focused on Turkey, AA regularly covers developments in Azerbaijan, specially focused on politics, regional relations, energy, and economy. The agency publishes in English, Turkish, Russian, Persian, Kurdish, and other languages 

ANAS  –  The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences is a main state research organization founded in 1945 that conducts research and coordinates activities in the fields of science and social sciences in Azerbaijan. Coverage in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English. 

AnewZ - Based in Baku and founded in 2024, AnewZ is an English language online outlet and live broadcaster. The outlet coverages Azerbaijan, the broader Caspian region, and global business and politics, typically from a pro-government perspective. 

APA - Major government owned news agency founded in 2004 that belongs to the APA Group. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. 

Azadliq -  Opposition led newspaper founded 1989 that reports on politics, economics, society, and culture in Azerbaijan. Azadliq is an outlet of the Azerbaijani Popular Front. Coverage in Azerbaijani and Russian. 

Azattyk – Kyrgyz regional office of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and funded by the United States through the U.S. Agency for Global Media. Publishes articles on political, economic and social affairs. Coverage in Kyrgyz and Russian. 

Azerbaijan - Official state newspaper for the Milli Mejlis that was founded in 2000. “Azerbaijan” offers daily print and online news about politics, economics, new laws, and important official documents. Coverage only in Azerbaijani. 

AZERTAC - State-owned news and information agency founded in 1920 that provides news on politics, economics, society, sports, and culture within Azerbaijan. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, Russian, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, and Spanish. 

AzLogos – Online platform founded in 2018 by Messoud Ashina that offers blogs and original content on global politics, business, entertainment, environment, technology, popular media, lifestyle, and culture with localized editions. AzLogos aims to promote critical thinking, universal values, and creative ideas by gathering Azerbajani scholars from all around the world. Coverage in Azerbaijani.

Azvision – Private news agency founded in 2014 that releases information on politics, economy, education, science, culture, health, sports, and the environment. Coverage in eight languages such as Azerbaijani, Hebrew, Persian, English, Russian, French, German and Spanish.

Baku Dialogues Journal - Baku-based policy journal put out by the Azerbaijani Diplomatic Academy. The publication focuses on international relations, global economy and supply chains, Azerbaijani national security, and more.  

BNE IntelliNews (Azerbaijan page) - Berlin-based independent news outlet covering Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Coverage typically skews toward business-coverage but also features political reporting and analysis. 

Caliber – Pro-Azerbaijani online media known for hyperbolic and dramatic coverage of regional politics and opinion pieces. Publishing in Azerbaijani and English. 

Eastern Neighborhood Bulletin – Substack page covering Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Page includes weekly newsletters, regular analytic writing, and occasional longform reports.  

Eurasia Daily Monitor - Publication launched in 2004 by the Jamestown Foundation, a Washington D.C. based institute for research and analysis. The Eurasia Daily Monitor is an analytical publication that surveys recent developments in Eurasia, providing overview and analysis of events. Coverage in English. 

Haqqin - Online information, analysis, and monitoring portal founded in 2011 by Evnulla Faullayev for the Public Association for Human Rights, a non-governmental human rights organization in Azerbaijan. Coverage includes current information on the activities of the Association for Human Rights, background and analysis on human rights issues, reviews and comments on important events taking place in Azerbaijan and the world, thematic interviews, expert opinions, as well as question-and-answer consultations. Coverage in Russian.

Heinrich Böll Foundation – Tbilisi Office, South Caucasus Region - The Caucasus oriented branch of the Heinrich Böll Foundation network of think tanks. Covering Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, the Tbilisi office focuses on politics, human rights, environmental and climate issues, and energy. An organization affiliated with the German Green Party, it often takes a climate-focuses perspective on energy. 

JAM News - Independent media outlet covering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia. Focuses on day-to-day news developments, local news, politics, and strong focus on diverse opinion writing. Publishing in English, Armenia, Azerbaijani, Georgian, and Russian. 

Kaspi - Daily socio-political newspaper that publishes a print version in Azerbaijani daily and in Russian biweekly. Online version has coverage in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English. 

Khalq (Xalq) -  Government owned socio-political daily newspaper that is available in both print and online. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. 

Khalq Cebhesi - Opposition led media source founded in 2001 that reports on politics, economics, and culture both internationally and in Azerbaijan. Coverage only in Azerbaijani. 

Lossi36 (Caucasus page) - Volunteer run platform for writing and analysis on Eastern Europe and Eurasia, specializing in political and cultural analysis. Lossi36 publishes in English and is geared toward early-career specialists and students, typically based in the West.

Meydan TV - Independent media source founded in 2013 by Emin milli and based out of Berlin that informs active citizens about politics, economics, and social problems, while creating a platform for the discussion of current events and issues. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. 

Mikroskop Media - Independent media source founded in 2018 that addresses how pro-government media manipulate the news. Coverage only in Azerbaijani. 

News - Private media outlet founded in 2009 that publishes analytical materials, articles and commentaries covering almost all spheres, including politics, economy, society, sports, culture, etc. Coverage in English. 

openDemocracy -  United Kingdom-based political website founded in 2001 that provides reporting and analysis of events throughout the world, including occasionally Central Asia and the Caucuses. “openDemocracy” is owned by the nonprofit openDemocracy Foundation for the Advancement of Global Education. openDemocracy was founded by Anthony Barnett, David Hayes, Susan Richards, and Paul Hilder. Coverage in English.

Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (Azerbaijan page)  (OCCRP) - Amsterdam based non-profit investigative reporting organization focused on corruption issues. OCCRP’s primary countries of interest include Venezuela, Russia, and Ukraine, but the organization also often publishes on Azerbaijan. 

Radiosu Azadlıq - Azerbaijani regional office of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty founded in 2004 and funded by the United States through the U.S. Agency for Global Media. RFE/RL Azerbaijan produces articles and videos covering politics, economics, and culture. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. 

Report News Agency - Pro-government media source founded in 2014 that provides readers with timely information on the key developments in the country and around the world regarding politics, economy, society, sport and culture. Coverage in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. 

Respublika - Official government media organ of the Cabinet of Ministers that was founded in 1990. Respublika reports on politics, economics, law, and society in Azerbaijan. Print and online versions available. Coverage only in Azerbaijani. 

Topchubashov Center –  Online platform founded in 2018 by Rusif Huseynov and Murad Muradov for authors writing about politics and governance in all forms and dimensions. It is dedicated to the analysis of international affairs, with a specific focus on the security and national interests of the South Caucasus, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Coverage in Azerbaijani and English

The Azeri Times – Online page, primarily based on X, publishing new and opinion in English on Azerbaijan and the broader ethnic-Azeri world. The page regularly posts and publishes pan-Turkic or ethnic-Azeri irredentist content. 

Trend News Agency - Private media  outlet founded in 1995 that covers news on the South Caucasus, Caspian region, and Central Asia. Analytical reports and articles produced by the agency highlight major political, economic and energy developments. Coverage in Azerbaijani, Russian, Turkish, and Persian.

Turan Monitor (Substack) - Substack publication and weekly newsletter covering Turkic-language countries (Turkey Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan) and Persian-language countries (Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan). Specific focus on economic news and international relations. The page is run by the Turan Research Center.

Yeni Azerbaijan - Media source owned by the ruling party, Yeni Azərbaycan Partiyası - New Azerbaijan Party, that provides daily news on politics, economics, and society in Azerbaijan. Coverage only in Azerbaijani. 

Yeni Musavat - Opposition led newspaper founded in 1989 by Rauf Arifoğlu that delivers daily news on politics, economics, and culture in Azerbaijan. Originally published as an underground media outlet. Coverage in Azerbaijani and Russian. 

Zerkalo - Socio-political and economic news website founded in 1990 that covers sports, culture, and  history in Azerbaijan and the world. Coverage only in Russian.



Television


Az TV - State-owned TV and Radio channel founded in 1956 that reports on Azerbaijan. Coverage in Azerbaijani and English. 

OSMANQIZI TV - Independent online television channel launched in 2011 by Sevinj Osmangizi on Youtube that provides coverage and analysis on events and processes taking place in Azerbaijan. Coverage in Azerbaijani. 

TURRAN TV (website currently inactive)- Independent and private platform that provides impartial news to Azerbaijanis around the world through a satellite TV channel and various online channels. Coverage in Azerbaijani.
