Kazakh Language Resources

Almaty Corpus of Kazakh Language- Collection of resources for working with Kazakh. 

Kaz Tili - Online language learning portal with Kazakh tales, proverbs, and grammar rules, but only for Russian speakers. 

Live Lingua - Peace Corps lessons and manuals for learning Kazakh available in English. 

Lugat - A collection of Kazakh dictionaries, including Kazakh-English, English-Kazakh, explanatory, dialectical, spelling, and others.   

My Languages - Kazakh audio lessons in English. Files can be downloaded and listened to on computer or mobile device. 

Qlang - Russian online platform for learning Kazakh. 

Soyle - Free online Kazakh courses for English speakers that includes vocabulary, reading, speaking, and watching sections. Separate section on Kazakh for children is also available. App for both Android and IOS applications. 

Sozdik - Standard Kazakh-Russian dictionary.



Russian Language Resources


Abbyy Lingvo Dictionary - Downloadable dictionary apps in Russian and English.  

Gramota - Resource useful for checking Russian verb governance, but only in Russian. 

Reverso Dictionary - Online dictionary for many languages, including Russian.  

Starling - Language resource useful for Russian declensions in both Russian and English. 

The Russian Dictionary Tree - Cornell University created Russian dictionary for English speakers.  

Vikislovar - Useful Russian dictionary, but only in Russian.  

Wiktionary - Resource useful for verb declensions and imperfective/perfective verbs in both English and Russian.



Study Abroad Resources


Programs

American Councils - American Councils for International Education hosts language programs and study abroad programs in over 90 different countries. American Councils offers two programs in Kazakhstan, both in Almaty. The first is "Russian Language and Area Studies Program" focused on Russian, while the second is "Eurasian Regional Language Program" focused on Kazakh. 

Fulbright - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. The Fulbright offers a number of English Teaching Assistant Awards and Research Awards to Kazakhstan each year. 



Funding


American Councils Scholarships -  American Councils offer a variety of scholarships to students participating in their programs. Scholarships include: Fulbright-Hays, AC Study Abroad Alumni Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Language and Area Studies Expert Scholarship, AC Study Abroad Need-Based Scholarship, and the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship. 

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship - The Gilman scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman is funded by the U.S. State Department.  

David L. Boren Scholarship and Fellowship - The Boren provides generous funding to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program and can be used to fund most study abroad programs.

The Foreign Language and Areas Studies Fellowships  -  FLAS Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related areas or international studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education. Many U.S. institutions offer FLAS fellowships and they can be used to cover study abroad programs.
