Eurasianet - Independent news organization founded in 1999 by the Open Society Institute that provides news, information, and analysis focused on countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Eurasianet is now hosted by Columbia University’s Harriman Institute and is supported by a variety of international foundations. Coverage in English and Russian.  

Gundogar - Opposition news outlet created by the founder of Turkmen Wiki, B. Shikhmuradov. Gundogar includes useful, analytical articles. Coverage only in Russian. 

Khronika Turkmenistana - Opposition news outlet founded in 2006 with a comment section that is often informative. Coverage in Russian, Turkmen and English. 

The Diplomat - International online news magazine founded in 2001 covering politics, society, and culture in Asia. The Diplomat frequently runs articles on Central Asia and is based in Washington, D.C. The Diplomat was founded by Minh Bui Jones, David Llewellyn-Smith, and Sung Lee.  Coverage in English. 

Times of Central Asia - Bishkek-based newspaper founded in 1999 by Giorgio Fiacconi that covers Central Asian politics, investments, economics, commerce, culture, social issues, corruption, and terrorism.  It ceased print publication in 2013 and is now only online. Coverage in English Only. 

Turkmenistan Live -  Private, pro-government business news outlet. Coverage only in Russian.

Turkmen News - Opposition news outlet based in Amsterdam and founded in 2010 that includes investigative journalism. Turkmen News was originally named Alternativnye Novosti Turkemnistana and its current Editor in Chief is Ruslan Myatiyev. Coverage in Turkmen and Russian. 



Government owned or Pro-Government Media


Arzuw News - Private, pro-government news outlet founded in 2012 that is occasionally mildly critical of the government. Coverage only in Russian.

Gundogar News - Private, pro-government outlet founded in 2013 and initially created to sow confusion about Gundogar, an independent news outlet. Gundogar news has an opinion section and is a good source to understand the regime’s position. Coverage only in Russian. 

Jeyhun News - State news outlet for the region of Lebap, Turkmenistan. Jeyhun news has limited information. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English. 

News Central Asia - Pakistan-based Turkmen news outlet, primarily pro-government and has a fee-based subscription. Useful for learning Turkmen. Published in Turkmen and English. 

Orient - Multimedia platform founded in 2017 that provides news on economics, society, culturel, technology, and sports within Turkmenistan. The Orient is owned by Media Turkmen, supposedly the first non-state news agency to be registered with Turkmenistan’s official authorities. Coverage in Russian and English. 

Parahat - Private news outlet that provides information about new laws, constitutions, and market developments. An account is necessary to access most of the information on Parahat. Coverage in Turkmen, Turkish, Russian, English, Mandarin, and Persian.

TDH - Main government news outlet founded in 2012. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English. 

Turkmen Business - Private, pro-government business news outlet. Coverage only in Russian. 

Turkmen Habar - Private, pro-government business news outlet. Coverage only in Turkmen.

Turkmen Inform - Private, pro-government outlet. Offers a subscription for a fee. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English.

Turkmenistan.ru - Russia based private, pro-government outlet. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English.

Turkmenistan - Golden Age - Government news outlet founded in 2017. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English.

Turkmenistan Info - Private, pro-government business news outlet. Coverage in Russian and English. 

Turkmen Portal - Private, pro-government outlet founded in 2011 that has basic information on various sectors. Turkmen Portal has a page on trade goods and often includes opinions and views the government accepts, but cannot officially express. Coverage in Turkmen, Russian, and English.

Turkmen TV - Official Turkmen government platform for television, radio broadcasting, and cinematography that was founded in 2011. Coverage in Turkmen.

Zaman News - Turkmen subsidiary of Turkish Zaman that supports the government. Coverage in Turkmen.



Independent Media


Azatlyk Radiosy - Turkmen regional office of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and funded by the United States through the Agency for Global Media. Publishes articles on political, economic and social affairs. Coverage in Turkmen and Russian.

Crossroads - Non-profit research institute co-founded by Shairbek Dzhuraev based in Bishkek that promotes a better understanding of the political, economic, and security affairs in Central Asia. Crossroads provides reports, commentaires, and a variety of other research projects. Coverage in English, Russian, German, French, and Chinese.

Eurasia Daily Monitor - Publication launched in 2004 by the Jamestown Foundation, a Washington D.C. based institute for research and analysis. The Eurasia Daily Monitor is an analytical publication that surveys recent developments in Eurasia, providing overview and analysis of events. Coverage in English. 

openDemocracy -  United Kingdom-based political website founded in 2001 that provides reporting and analysis of events throughout the world, including occasionally Central Asia and the Caucuses. “openDemocracy” is owned by the nonprofit openDemocracy Foundation for the Advancement of Global Education. openDemocracy was founded by Anthony Barnett, David Hayes, Susan Richards, and Paul Hilder. Coverage in English.

Turkmen Yurt TV - Opposition news outlet with a Youtube channel, but has some reliability issues. Coverage in Russian, Turkmen and English.
